Eco Max Eco Friendly Scrub Brush

Let’s face it, cleaning is no picnic. It is something you want to get done efficiently and as quickly as possible, especially when it is the more heavy duty areas like floors and tiles in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry. Although I do love the satisfaction of a clean house and it is great exercise! Using eco friendly brushes and products is also very satisfying. It is an important place to consider your eco footprint. So many cleaning materials and products are bad for the environment and your health. Sometimes you need a good scrub!

This is a Japanese inspired scrubbing brush, with a mixture of two vegetable fibres together onto a rounded, comfortable to hold FSC certified rubber wood base, to make the ultimate natural scrub brush! Tampico, a form of cactus is a strong yet softer fibre to give a good overall clean. It absorbs more water than any other natural fibre and releases it as you scrub. Rice root, which doesn’t come from rice, is the root of a native grass called Zatacon from the Mexican highlands. The incorrect name probably derives from the Spanish word ‘raiz’, which means ‘root’. It is naturally springy, slightly curly and extremely tough which gives the Scrub Brush that extra strength for hard scouring.

The Eco Max Range is environmentally-friendly, biodegradable and entirely handmade – products utilize waste products and natural materials that can replace plastics in the kitchen.

Using Fair Trade principles all the handmade components use natural unbleached materials, such as Alistonia timber and natural sisal or waste products, such as the coco fibre from the husk of the coconut, and rubber wood, a waste product from rubber production. Even the sealant used on the timber is a non-toxic toy paint sealer.

Our Eco Max Brushes are handmade in Sri Lanka by a small family run business that prides itself on creating beautiful, sustainable brushes while providing employment and training for women. Handed down from father to daughter, Liza now runs the factory in Wattala, which trains and employs women from a slum close to the new express way. This training and work allows the women to earn a living wage and a bonus scheme increases their weekly pay. Their children are also encouraged to continue their studies and pursue further education.

Unfortunately the slum is prone to flooding and during the wet season the women and their family are often forced to leave their home and move into the factory. There has been ongoing negotiation with government about relocating these families to flood free land close by and it is hoped that this will occur this year. The company has put aside extra finances to help with the women’s relocation which will allow, with the amount provided by the government, for them to rebuild their homes. Rather than retire, Liza’s father is now training women to make brushes in Kurunegala, an area where employment opportunities are limited. He hopes to set up a training centre in Jaffna in the near future.

Eco Max Brushes use only natural vegetable fibres, are biodegradable and sustainable. The brushes are registered with The Vegan Society and our partners who supply the range are working closely with the women to develop new brushes using new fibres.
